Volvo offers its I-Shift AMT in five distinct packages. Features vary, but the overall focus is always on fuel economy. The transmission features 12 speeds with up to four reverse gears. Its high torque rating allows the AMT to be easily upgraded for “unlimited” engine power and torque ratings.

Reviewer CommentsI’m most impressed with the fact that it is fully integrated into the Volvo engine and powertrain. They are totally in tune with each other and work together seamlessly. It is truly fully-integrated and does exactly what Volvo said it would out on the road.It’s an excellent transmission. We’re very happy with it and will continue to spec it.
There were initial driver perceptions that we had to overcome. But the drivers love it now. They were worried about it in bad weather – we get some snow and they were worried about downshifts and the drivers felt they wouldn’t be able to control the truck. But they love it in the snow now.
I’m most impressed with the fact that it is fully integrated into the Volvo engine and powertrain. They are totally in tune with each other and work together seamlessly. It is truly fully-integrated and does exactly what Volvo said it would out on the road.
We haven’t had any maintenance issues to speak of. Nothing serious. A couple of minor bugs here and there. But nothing serious.
Our fuel economy boost has been right in line with what Volvo told us to expect: We’ve gained about a half a mile per gallon increase in fuel economy. We’ve taken the drivers totally out of the loop on fuel economy with this transmission. We only give them the option of using “Drive,” and it works out just fine. But from the start, we didn’t want them thinking they could drive the truck for fuel economy better than the transmission can.
Dealer and OEM support has been outstanding.
I think access to the transmission is ok… To be honest, we just haven’t had to do a lot of work on them. So I really don’t know. I haven’t heard any horror stories or complaints from my guys about working on them, though.

We’re very happy with the transmission and planning on buying more of them. They’re much easier for the driver than other AMTs in our fleet. They take a lot of the headaches away and aren’t fatiguing for them to drive. Our driver feedback has been very positive. They love them.
They can be a little quirky at times – especially for an inexperienced driver. The brake pedal has to be pressed for it to start and little things like that. But I have no major complaints. It’s a fine transmission.
We don’t work on them – they’re under warranty. So I can’t comment on packaging and service access. But I can tell you our OEM and dealer support has been fine.

This is our first year to run an AMT and our drivers were really excited to be getting the I-Shift transmissions. A few of them said they didn’t want those “sissy” things, but now they don’t want to give them up.
The engine and the transmission speak the same language to each other. And I think integration like that is a good thing. It certainly is showing up in our fuel economy numbers which have increased dramatically. We’re getting over 7 mpg in our line-haul and sleeper trucks.
